At Lucid Digital we use the open source CMS (content management system) platform WordPress. In this article we will answer the common question of ‘what is WordPress?’ as well as why we have chosen this platform to build your websites on.
WordPress is most probably the most powerful yet easy to use CMS platform available, meaning it is easy to update and maintain for the user. Whether you are a coder with the skills of Mr. Robot or a total technophobe, with a little practice you will be able to update your website easily.
Is WordPress secure?
A common myth is that WordPress websites are not secure and are vulnerable to being hacked, this simply isn’t true. Provided your website is looked after and hosted on a secure server then you won’t have any problems. This goes for any website on all other CMS platforms as well, if you are not making sure everything is up to date then you could be putting your website at risk.
Some tips we recommend for keeping your website secure and protected against hacking:
- Keep all plugins and the core WordPress software version up to date
- Use the minimum number of plugins unless needed, we build our websites making sure everything is custom therefore we use just a few tried and tested plugins we know for a fact are safe.
- Host your website on a safe and up to date server with the latest version of PHP (the language that WordPress is coded in)
- Install a good firewall and security plugin (we use Wordfence on all of our websites)
- If your website is hosted with us on our secure dedicated server we will take care of all of these things for you.
Isn’t WordPress just for blogs?
Is another question we often hear. WordPress did originally start out as a blogging platform that’s correct, but soon evolved to building traditional websites with a large community worldwide having realised its potential. There really are no limits to what you can achieve with WordPress when it comes to building websites, be it portfolios, web applications, e-commerce shops and even social networks – if you fancy becoming the next Mark Zuckerberg or Tom from MySpace (if you were born before 1995)!
WordPress currently makes up for over 33% of all websites online, and this impressive number is growing every year. With this increase, other CMS platforms such as Drupal and Joomla’s market share are dropping, solidifying that WordPress is the current market leader and is showing no signs of moving from the top spot.
Big brands don’t use WordPress
A common misconception is that WordPress is not a powerful CMS system because it’s only used by smaller companies or because it is an open source platform. Again, this isn’t true – WordPress is used by some of the biggest brands in the world. In 2017 the White House transferred from using the CMS Drupal over to WordPress, but don’t let the fact Donald Trump is using it put you off. Other brands including AMC, The New Yorker nd Star Wars use WordPress, but we definitely wouldn’t say that it’s the dark side.
Reasons our developers choose WordPress
Our developers have years of experience working across different agencies using a whole host of different CMS platforms from Joomla to custom CMS platforms. Despite the choice and variety available, we feel WordPress is the best solution for the websites we build down to its flexibility, usability and the amount of support that is around in the WordPress community.
We continuously assess current technologies making sure we are using the latest practices and tools to give you the best possible product. If technology changes, then we will adapt with it. We will always continue researching and ensuring our team are fully up to date with the latest practices and technology so we will never fall behind when it comes to designing and building websites and everything that is associated with it.
